It was our second visit to Barcelona. The first time we were there for almost a week and had pretty much visited everything. Well we had done everything except go inside the Sagrada Familia.

Food had figured prominently in our first trip so with lots of time to spare on our second visit I decided that a cooking class might be fun. There were many cooking classes to choose from (including Airbnb “experiences”). Most (if not all) involved paella and crema catalan.

In the end, based on availability, time, and cost we chose Barcelona Cooking School. The other reason we chose them was that the Paella was seafood only and Fille does not eat meat. Our class took place from 10am to 2pm and started with a tour of the Boqueria.

We didn’t really want to include the Boqueria since we felt we knew it well enough but that was how the class was structured. In the end, we learned a lot from taking their tour and also bought some of the ingredients for the meal including shrimp and squid.

The dishes we made were:

  • Crema de Calabaza (Butternut Squash and Pear Soup)
  • Tortilla Espanola (Spanish Omelette)
  • Pan con Tomate (Tomato Bread)
  • Caldo de Pescado (Fish Stock)
  • Paella de Marisco (Seafood Paella)
  • Crema Catalana (Catalan Cream)

Our group was small, myself and fille and three women from the United States. So we each had a lot of hands on experience with preparing the meal. Wine flowed liberally while cooking and when done we ate what we had prepared.

Since then, I have made the Spanish Omelette a number of times and fille is an expert at Pan con Tomate. I haven’t made the soup, paella or crema mostly because we just haven’t had time.

If you have time in Barcelona, I highly recommend their cooking class. Between the market tour, the cooking experience and the food it was well worth it!
